Veterinary Explorers Post

Our post is one of several in the county relating to different professions. It is open to all high school students in Findlay and Hancock County. The Explorers post is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. Questionnaires are being sent to the local schools to attract interested students. Inquiries can be made by contacting Dr. Calland at DrCalland@aol.com or by calling the Findlay Animal Hospital at 419-423-7232.  Membership dues for the year are only $7.00.  Programs from years past included a trip to the Toledo Zoo's Veterinary department, Alpaca Jacks Alpaca farm, ultrasound, surgery, endoscopy, oncology, and herpetology to list a few.

The next Veterinary Explorers meeting will be on Tuesday evening April 29, 2008 at 7:00 PM at The Findlay Animal Hospital.  Dr. Henninger from the University Equine Services will be the speaker.  He will discuss Equine medicine and surgery.  We will meet for approximately 1 hour.

Sorry for the delay and short notice.  It has been difficult arranging meetings to accommodate the busy schedules this Spring.  Please let me know if you can make this meeting so I can get a head count.

March 9
Meeting Notes:
The last meeting at the Conference Room at The Findlay Animal Hospital.
The students presented short topics about the care of their own pets.

January 23
Meeting Notes:
The last meeting at The Humane Society was well attended and interesting for the students.  Surgical techniques were demonstrated in the Humane Society Surgical suite as well as a tour of the Humane Society.

December 2nd
Meeting Notes:
The last meeting on Dec 2nd was moderated by Dr. Freeman and the topic was challenging cases and brain teasers.

November 6th
Meeting Notes:
Our first meeting was an introduction to the Veterinary Explorers with a short presentation on Veterinary Medicine.  We had over 20 students sign up this year.

2006-2007 Meeting Notes

April 24th
Meeting Notes:
Our last Veterinary Explorers' Meeting this spring dealt with soft tissue surgery and was presented by Dr. Higginbotham, one of our staff veterinarians. She discussed soft tissue surgery, then performed a spay procedure on a feline patient.

March 4th
Meeting Notes:
The last meeting on endoscopy featured a short discussion followed by an actual procedure.

January 31st
Meeting Notes:
The last meeting was attended at The Findlay Animal Hospital where Dr. Jones discussed ultrasonography and demonstrated how we can see inside our patients with this instrument.

December 13th
Meeting Notes:
The last meeting was attended at The Blanchard Valley Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Freeman presented case studies to tease the brain!
